The problem we kept running into
UPI made paying effortless — and made spending invisible. When every payment is a two-second tap, the money stops feeling real. At the end of the month the balance is lower than expected, and the honest answer to ‘where did it go?’ is a shrug. The record exists — it is sitting in your bank statement — but that statement is a wall of cryptic codes like UPI/ZOMATO@ICICI/Order123 that no normal person wants to read line by line.
We looked at the existing options and none of them felt right. The budgeting apps that could answer the question all wanted the same thing: link your bank account, hand over ongoing access, create an account, and trust them with your data indefinitely. For a one-time question — where did my money go? — that is an enormous amount to give away. So we built the tool we actually wanted to use.
What UPI Audit does
UPI Audit does one thing well. You download your bank, PhonePe, or Google Pay statement as a PDF, upload it, and get a complete breakdown of your UPI and IMPS spending — sorted into nine clear categories, broken down by merchant, with monthly trends and your top merchants. It takes about 30 seconds and there is no signup, no bank linking, and nothing to install. You can read more about how it works or the banks and apps we support.
The principles we refused to compromise on
The entire product is shaped by a few non-negotiable rules:
- Processed in memory, never stored. Your PDF is read in server memory for the few seconds it takes to build your report, and then it is gone. It is never written to a disk or a database. There is nothing to leak, because nothing is kept.
- No account, ever. No email, no phone number, no password. The moment you close the tab, there is no trace that you were here.
- No third-party APIs with your data. Every transaction is categorised locally using our own rules. Your spending is never sent to an outside service or an AI API. This is a deliberate choice — it would be easier to build with a cloud service, but it would break the privacy promise.
- Free, and not paywalled. The core tool is free to use. We would rather build something genuinely useful and widely used than lock the answer behind a subscription.
If you care about the details, our UPI privacy and safety guide and our privacy policy spell out exactly how your data is handled.
Built for India — read around the world
UPI Audit was built first for India's 500 million-plus UPI users, and that is still who it serves best. But we have been genuinely happy to see readers from around the world — including a growing number in the United States — finding our guides while trying to understand how India built the payment system everyone is talking about. If that is how you got here: welcome. We have written plainly about how India's payment system works and how UPI was built, and we think both are worth your time even if you never upload a statement.
How is UPI Audit free? The honest answer
A fair question — free tools sometimes mean you are the product. Not here. UPI Audit is supported by non-intrusive display ads on the site, and that is the entire business model. We do not sell data — there is no data to sell, because we do not keep any. We do not have a premium tier that unlocks your ‘real’ results, and we do not quietly share your transactions with anyone, because the whole thing is built so that we never see or store them in the first place. If the ads ever paid the bills and we wanted to add something more, it would still have to pass the same test: does it keep your data in your hands? If the answer is no, it does not ship.
We think this is the right trade. A tool you use once a month to check your spending does not need to know who you are, and a company that never holds your financial data can never lose it, sell it, or be pressured to hand it over. That constraint is not a limitation we work around — it is the product.
Where we are headed
The mission is simple: make the money that digital payments made invisible visible again — without asking you to trade away your privacy to do it. Everything we add will be measured against that. If a feature requires storing your data, linking your account, or shipping your transactions to someone else's server, it does not get built.
If you have a bank we do not yet parse well, or an idea that fits the mission, tell us on the contact page. And if you have never actually looked at where your money goes, try the audit — it is free, private, and takes about 30 seconds.
